Following his testimony on Capitol Hill last week, The Vampire Diaries star Ian Somerhalder spoke about youth involvement in conservation efforts. Realizing that his celebrity status allowed him to reach a new generation with regards to environmentalism, he fired up his Twitter account (and that of his foundation) to spread sto ries, videos and links about important issues. He says in the interview:

“How do you make energy policy cool to a 16-year-old? How do you make water conservation cool? Through entertainment. You have people in the pop culture world who are explaining this information to them, and all of a sudden they get it and they appreciate it. Then their life is ultimately changed.”

“Luckily, in this time when we so, so need it, social media has come to save the day. You can divulge information, share a thought within a nanosecond and millions of people see it and they become involved…you have all this synergy out there from one click of a button and one thought. That is profound.”
