Last week, Ian Somerhalder took his conservation efforts to the national level, asking Congress to reinstate funding to protect endangered species. Now, the “Vampire Diaries” star is tackling the whole world.

Combining his passi

on for nature and travel, Somerhalder is hosting Planet Green’s Blue August, which premieres August 21. The week-long series will explore the wonders of the ocean and aquatic life, with Somerhalder serving as guide both on air and online.

Somerhalder has been vocal in his support for the protection of the leatherback turtle, and now viewers will get the chance to see why. Part of the Blue August programming includes his trip to Trinidad and Tobago to learn about the sea turtles’ life cycle and watch as a beach is transformed into a nesting ground for them.

The star is very involved with Blue August off-camera as well. The official partners for the program are the Ian Somerhalder Foundation and the Alliance for Global Conservation, for whom Somerhalder serves as spokesman.

The week’s lineup includes an encore presentation of the 2001 mini-series Blue Planet, as well as Planet Earth, Oceans Blue and Blood Dolphins.

So what’s next for TV’s hottest vampire? According to one of Somerhalder’s recent tweets, “Back to reality! Work — fighting werewolves and $h#% all night.” Hey, he’s gotta make a living so he can keep supporting the environment, right?
