Although most of Peter Falk‘s fans will remember him as Columbo, PETA is paying tribute to him for a whole different reason.  When he wasn’t playing a hero onscreen, Peter was a real-life hero and leading man for animal rights. He passed away Thursday, June 23, 2011.

ft”>As one of the first celebrity supporters of PETA, Peter supported the organization when they protested against Las Vegas animal trainer Bobby Berosini for beating orangutans used in an act .  He also used his fame to speak out against animal violence to law enforcement; reminding them that the abuse and killing of animals is just the beginning, it’s often a precursor to other violent crimes.

Peter’s activism didn’t stop when it came to his work.  He would allow only cruelty-free cosmetics on the set and signed the “Get Gillette Off the Set” petition to remove their products from all studio sets and offices.

And just one more thing… “You do not have to be a detective to know that, after years of confinement, chains, and beatings with bullhooks, these animals are going to rebel.” – Peter Falk
