The Miss Florida USA pageant has at least one new fan: fashion guru Tim Gunn. Gunn, who is famous for his role as mentor on the reality competition show “Project Runway,” was thrilled when he heard that the Florida beauty pageant would no longer be offering a mink coat to the winner.

“As you may remember, I made a personal appe

al on PETA’s behalf in 2009 asking that Miss Florida USA no longer use real furs as prizes,” said Gunn, “and I’m absolutely thrilled to hear the recent news that this year’s winner will not receive a mink coat.”

Gunn has been an anti-fur advocate in the past, even making statements at New York Fashion Week and co-hosting a fur-free fashion show to try to convince the rest of the industry to follow suit.

“Thank you for making the kind decision to forgo furs as prizes and sending the message to other pageants and people everywhere that there’s nothing glamorous about the way that animals suffer and die in the fur industry,” Gunn continued in his statement. Indeed! A victory for Florida, for beauty pageants, and of course for animals.
