Every year the Environmental Media Association seeks out the greenest celebrities, movie sets, television episodes, and entertainment programming that brings environmental awareness to millions of people.
On Oct. 15th, the EMA Awards honored celebrities using their star power to create change, films that have raised awareness and used green ideas and initiatives on set or delivered an important environmental message, and the people in the entertainment industry who have gone above and beyond to help protect the environment.
This year, Justin Timberlake was honored with the EMA Futures Award for his commitments green living and for using his celebrity power for environmental activism. The award is given to celebrate a person, “just hitting his stride in terms of environmental commitment and activism.” While receiving the award during the ceremony in Burbank, California, Timberlake joked about his love of green “herbs.”
Timberlake wasn’t the only one to be honored at the awards ceremony. Marc Nathanson, EMA Board of Directors, was honored with the Ongoing Commitment Award. Southern California Edison was honored with the EMA Corporate Responsibility Award and PGA Green was honored with the EMA Green Production Award for their dedication to creating a greener entertainment industry.
“Yogi Bear,” beat out “The Other Guys” and “Rio” for greenest feature film. “Revenge of the Electric Car,” took the EMA Award for best documentary. The cartoon “Futurama” pitted its episode “The Futurama Holiday Spectacular” against Betty White’s “Hot in Clevend” episode “Elka’s Snowbird” and the “Nurse Jackie” episode “Mitten”. “Futurama” came out with the win for greenest Episodic Comedy.
CSI: Crime Scene Investigation won the EMA Award for Episodic Drama with the episode “Fracked” against episodes from “Body of Proof” and “The Good Wife.” Bill Maher earned an EMA Award for Reality Television with Episode 188 of “Real Time with Bill Maher” along with “HGTV Green Home 2011.”
The EMA Awards had a hard time finding the right winner from the nominations for Children’s Television which included “Bubble Guppies: Boy Meets Squirrel,” “Fish Hooks: Legend of the Earth Troll” and “Zeke and Luther: Ball of Trash.” “Bubble Guppies” won the award for raising awareness about environmental issues.
All the nominees should feel proud at what they have accomplished for raising awareness about the environment and for the actions they have taken to make the world a greener place. They are all winners in our eyes.
