Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane is honoring his mother’s memory by helping a cause she was passionate about: animal rescue.

MacFarlane’s mother, Perry, passed away in July 2010 after a protracted battle with cancer. Now, in honor of the one-year anniversary of her death, he is partnering with the Heaven on Earth Animal Society, a no-kill cat shelter, to establish Perry’s Place, a cage-free sanctuary and adoption center for homeless cats.

The partnership means that cats that aren’t adopted from Heaven on Earth will get a second chance at Perry’s Place. MacFarlane is working with Causes.com to fund the sanctuary; animal lovers can donate through the site. For each $1 donation, an anonymous donor will contribute an additional $10.

Perry’s compassion and love for animals both wild and domestic touched the lives of those who knew her. According to former radio host Larry King, “her friends called her a bright light who sparkled…Perry touched many who celebrated her life.”

MacFarlane’s goal is to raise $50,000 for Perry’s place. As of Thursday, more than $11,000 had been donated through Causes.com.
