Pop star Janet Jackson has detailed her favorite vegan foods to Jay Leno and is noted as a “vegetarian celebrity” by the Animal Liberation Front. But now she is losing fans — including a Michigan man, Sean Oltersdorf, who is putting his entire memorabilia collection for sale on eBay
in protest as she is partnering with fur company Blackgama to design, promote and model a line of genuine mink fur coats, jackets, vests, scarves and gloves.
All Blackgama items are created with the “highest quality mink in the world”; indeed, “less than 2% of the world’s Black mink population [is] deemed worthy of the exclusive Blackglama name,” according to the company’s website. Jackson has been enthusiastic about the partnership, saying that “the art of fashion is my passion” and that she’s “worked for years to bring a collection into the world.” Some are applauding her for being so “brazen” to launch a fur line.
It takes an average of 40 minks to make one fur coat and those minks’ lives are spent in crowded cages, prior to their slaughtering with poison, electrocution, suffocation or gas. Oltersdorf has teamed up with PETA in selling off his over 25 years of Jackson memorabilia. PETA activists have already staged a protest earlier this year outside one of Jackson’s concerts in the Philippines, in which animals rights activists wore “grim reaper” costumes and carried placards proclaiming “Janet: Animals suffer and die on fur farms,” “Janet: Fur is Dead,” and “Fur Shame.”
It goes without saying that Jackson’s embrace of Blackgama’s fur clothing contradicts her public statements about a vegan diet and being a vegetarian. If fur is indeed her “passion,” Oltersdorf (who says he has three rescued chinchillas) may not be the only one to declare himself a former Jackson fan.
