Brazil's government says destruction of the Amazon rain forest rose in June as compared to the same month last year.

The National Institute for Space Research tracks the deforestation using satellite images. It says that 121 square miles (312 square kilometers) were destroyed in June.

That is up from the 94 square miles (244 square kilometers) d estroyed during the same month a year ago.

Brazil's government has stepped up enforcement of environmental laws in recent years. It says that has helped reduce Amazon destruction.
