Actress Emily Deschanel opened up to the Ladies Home Journal about the pressures of Hollywood and the fact that people still judge her for maintaining her vegan diet during pregnancy.

The Bones actress and devoted animal activist said about the un solicited advice on her diet, “Saying no to meat makes me feel stronger inside; I feel aligned with my morals and ethics. I still have to defend myself because people don’t understand it. As a pregnant woman especially, people will say to me, ‘You must eat meat and dairy.’ You really have to tap into your self-esteem whenever people try to convince you you’re making the wrong choice.”

Perhaps those people haven’t read that the American Dietetic Association says that a vegan diet can be perfectly healthy through all stages of life, including pregnancy.

Deschanel started her journey to veganism twenty years ago after seeing the documentary ‘Diet for a New America.’ As the star and a producer on ‘Bones,’ she’s even helped to highlight various animal issues like factory farming and dog fighting through storylines on the show.
