If you love the feeling that the holiday season evokes of a peaceful, warm glow, then you probably enjoy the feeling that Christmas candles give off, as well. However, did you know that paraffin candles might be more dangerous than you realize?

Paraffin is a petroleum-based byproduct made from crude oil. Since paraffin in its original form is grayish-black in color, a serious dose of bleaching is required in order to bring it up to its pure white color. This powerful bleaching system then uses a carcinogenic toxin in order to create its new solid white form. Once you light the candles, the paraffin has the potential to release these toxins into your air, your environment, and even worse, your lungs.

There are several reasons for concern when lighting a paraffin candle. For one thing, the possibility for emitting potential carcinogens into the air and for another, a residue that resembles soot may find rest on your furniture and into your airways. This residue may cause serious issues such as asthma, upper respiratory infections, and allergies to name but a few. In addition, the more fragrance a candle has, the potential for much more soot exists, as well.

Many years ago, lead wicks used in candles had the potential to release lead contamination and pose a health risk. These lead wicks were recalled, but there is still a slight possibility that these candles may still be in some individual’s homes or still sold in some market place arenas.

Therefore, what is the alternative? Fortunately, there are alternatives to the paraffin candle risk.

Soy Candles – Soy candles are a wonderful alternative to paraffin candles and lead wick candles. Soy candles provide many benefits in that they are made from 100% soybeans. Soy candles burn cleaner and without any reside or toxic chemicals released in the process. Soy candles also offer natural fragrances and are easy to clean up, as well.

Beeswax – Beeswax candles are wonderful in that they are produced 100 % from nature. Bees make this wax during their work with the honeycomb. Beeswax candles are safe, do not burn toxic chemicals, and have a light, sweet, and natural scent.

Palm Wax – Another natural for making safe candles is palm wax. Palm wax is made from naturally from palm oil. Again, palm wax burns light and clean with no toxins involved. Some manufacturers combine palm and soy wax to make a different type of candle that is more firm.

So, as you can see, there are many reasons to stay away from paraffin Christmas candles because there are much safer alternatives. Enjoy the holidays, let them burn bright, but let them burn safely, as well.
