Today we are celebrating World Environment Day (WED), an annual event to raise awareness about our planet’s issues.
World Environment Day began in 1972 as a way to encourage people to take positive environmental action and to also get political attention. Every year World Environment Day has a theme and this year''s theme is &qu ot;Green Economy: Does It Include You?" and the main World Environment Day event is taking place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Activities to celebrate World Environment Day around the world include parades, rallies, art exhibitions, concerts and competitions.
What is the Green Economy?
The United Nations Environment Program defines Green Economy as "one that results in improved human well-being and social equity, while significantly reducing environmental risks and ecological scarcities. In its simplest expression, a green economy can be thought of as one which is low carbon, resource efficient and socially inclusive." It is an initiative that proposes an alternative sustainable way of doing business and promotes the creation of green jobs.
So, what are you doing today to celebrate WED?
