We’ve been covering electric conversions of the classic DMC-12 DeLorean (made famous by a certain movie with Michael J. Fox) over the years, so you can imagine our giddiness at hearing that the company responsible for the iconic car is throwing a new all-electric model into production.
The announcement came during the DeLorean Motor Company’s bian nual DMC headquarters gathering in Houston last weekend. A prototype of the vehicle, expected to go on sale in 2013, was shown off to the public looking very much like the original. According to CEO Steve Wynne, that design choice was intentional. ”I know my market well, and there are certain things we won’t mess with,” he told AutoWeek. “It will keep the stainless-steel exterior. We still want it to be a real car.”
Final specs are still being decided, but the numbers thrown around so far call for a 260 horsepower vehicle with a top speed of 125mph and a range just over the century mark. Car blog Jalopnik scored a test drive and came away excited over the vehicle’s potential comeback as an eco sports car. “A proper, factory-backed electric DeLorean makes so much sense that it seems like the destiny that this timeless-1980s icon was always meant to fulfill,” they wrote.
Unfortunately, you’ll either need to be filthy rich or own a handy “Sports Almanac” from the future to own this beauty. Expect the new all-electric DMC-12 to cost $90K-$100K when its released. Great Scott!
