If Hollywood ever wanted to save on the visual effects used to create a massive traffic jam for some alien invasion film, next week’s construction event in Los Angeles is the perfect opportunity.
In what’s being described with ever-increasing apocalyptic tones, officials are urging people to stay the hell away from Interstate 405 next weekend – a massive north-south highway that connects LA with many of its densely populated suburbs. A 53-hour closure of a 10-mile portion of the route is expected to snarl traffic; in some cases creating jams up to 32 miles long in either direction.
“If you think the 405 is gridlocked during the week, you haven’t seen anything yet,” Mayor Antonio R. Villaraigosa told the NY Times last week. “My message is to stay home. Or go on vacation. Walk. Go on a bike. But do not get in your car and go anywhere near the West Side. It’s going to be a mess.”
In a sign of the times, LAPD officials have also tapped celebrities with massive Twitter followers to assist in warning residents to stay away. Lady Gaga, Ashton Kutcher, Demi Moore, and Kim Kardashian were all singled out – with Kutcher being the first to assist.
”LAPD askd me 2tweet: 405 fwy btwn 10 & 101 will b closed July 16-17. In xchange I would like a free pass on that stoplight tickt IT WAS YELLOW,” he humorously tweeted.
So LA residents, how are you planning to avoid Carmageddon next weekend?
