Childbirth is possibly one of nature’s most amazing miracles. There is nothing else like it, and no two childbirth stories are the same. Especially if you are about to give birth for the first time, you might be feeling a little uneasy or scared about the process and what to expect. Of course you want your experience to be the best it could possibly be, both for your own well being but also the health and well being of your little one.
Here are some tips to help you along:
Ask Questions
When it comes to the birth of a child, no question is stupid and there is no such thing as too many questions. Make a list of worries and things to ask, and sit down to have a conversation with your doctor. Don’t be embarrassed, either, rest assured that your doctor has likely seen and heard everything.
You can also talk to other women about their birth experiences. In fact, most women love to talk about their birth stories, and will be happy to tell you everything you want to know. You might even learn some things that you didn’t necessarily want to know. If at any time you get uncomfortable or someone’s story is too graphic or scary, because those stories certainly do exist, feel free to stop the person and explain to them that you would rather focus on the positive parts of their story.
Make A Plan
You and your doctor, and your partner too if you wish, should sit down and make a plan. This plan should include everything from what you should pack to take to the hospital with you, to whether or not you plan to take certain medications during the birth.
Having a plan is one of the best ways to feel a little calmer and more comfortable with everything that is getting ready to happen. The more you plan, the more in control you will feel over this very overwhelming event in your life. Of course, not everything always goes according to plan, but having a baseline as well as a few “what if” back up decisions will help you to feel calmer when everything starts happening all at once.
Take Care of Yourself
One of the most important keys to a positive birth experience is treating your mind and body well. Try to de-stress as much as possible, meditate and practice deep breathing to calm your mind even when things start feeling out of control.
While you are pregnant and after delivery it is important to take care of your body to the very best of your ability. Make sure to stay hydrated and eat healthy, balanced meals and snacks to keep your body healthy and energized. According to your doctor’s orders, try to get some exercise such as taking walks or try light prenatal yoga.
The better you take care of yourself, the more prepared your body will be for childbirth. Also, don’t forget that you aren’t just taking care of yourself, but you’re carrying a passenger that needs to be fed and hydrated as well.
Overall, take it easy and try not to panic. Childbirth is a natural occurrence that your body is ready for, in fact this is what your body was made to do. Follow these guidelines and you can achieve a successful and positive birth experience.
