Nelson Mandela, former South African president and anti-apartheid hero, has died at the age of 95, CNN reports.
“He is now at peace,” President Zuma said. “Our nation has lost its greatest son. Our people have lost a father.”
His name and ideas have inspired many people. He was a tireless fighter for freedom, equality and environmental issues. In 2002, he stated, “the absence of access to clean water is the most stark in the widespread impoverishment of the natural environment”.
In 2009, the United Nations officially declared July 18 as Nelson Mandela Day as a way to honor Mandela’s legacy and work towards building a peaceful, sustainable and equitable world.
We have lost one of the greatest leaders in generations. RIP Mandela.
